The Contemporary Issue and Explain What External Stressors are Associated With this

Issue

Body image and self-esteem are contemporary issues affect ing teenagers today.

Self-esteem is affected by the desire for inclusion in the eye of others. When

teenagers have low self-esteem, they often perceive themselves to be unable to

mingle and be approached for who they are, and this affects their body image and

self-perception (Wilcox, 2016). The process of addressing self-esteem and body

image-related concerns requires the development of measures targeting teenagers

and society in such a way that both part ies can embrace and appreciate their inherent

diversity.

Negative body image and low self-esteem are enhanced by a plethora of external

stressors such as body weight, physical appearance, color and type of hair, and

intelligence level. For teenagers, the perception of others about these factors is

crit ical in determining their ability to feel accommodated in society. When they are

judged based on their high weights, improper hair type, or lo intelligence, there is a

high likelihood that teenagers will prefer being in isolat ion, and this can have

detrimental effects on their wellbeing (Taylor & Wardy, 2014). Teenagers feel

rejected when they cannot learn to accept and appreciate their imperfect ions, such

as being overweight or having rough faces as part of their lives.

Assessment Strategies

Assessing teenagers suffering from body image and self-esteem issues can be useful

if teenagers are provided with opportunit ies for self-evaluation. This process will help

in identifying the way they understand themselves in terms of self-perception and

the basis of the desire to compare themselves with others. It will also be an

opportunity for identifying the trigger factors (Wilcox, 2016). The process of

addressing the identifies issues will require the integration of different approaches

such as focus groups and social groups, which will provide an opportunity for sharing

experiences and integrating with others to develop sustainable solut ions and be

hopeful.

Some of the questions that can define the assessment process include?

· Tell me something about yourself that you think I do not know?

· Can you outline your three most effect ive strengths?

· What are some of your weaknesses?

From an ethical perspective, confidentiality should be the determining factor in a

conversation with teenagers. It would be necessary to reveal information to parents

or guardians if it is based on the desire to protect and enhance the life and health of

the teenager (Taylor & Wardy, 2014). Whenever there is sufficient evidence revealing

the possibility that a teenager could harm himself or herself or if the parents or

guarding ae contributing to the predicaments of the teenager, then sharing would be

warranted.

Support Options for Adolescents Encountering External Stressors

Addressing the problem of self-esteem and body image would require collaboration

between the teenagers and the counselor. These are because the latter with be

providing a professional and experienced approach that will be based on developing

unique, posit ive, and constructive solut ions to the teenagers. Exposing the teenagers

to group forums will also be a way of ensuring that they share their challenges with

their peers. Through this approach, it will be possible to minimize the possibility of

feeling rejected because of the social support received from peers (Taylor & Wardy,

2014). The integration of parental assistance can also be a way through which

teenagers will be provided with a platform for care and love despite the challenges

that they may be facing in the external environment.
