Shirley started her music career at the age of ten and has since then recorded more than forty albums. She has used her vocals to spread messages of faith. During her youth, Shirley joined the Caravans:James Cleveland, Delores Washington,Inez Andrews, Dorothy Norwood,and Albertina Walker. They sang and recorded together from the year 1958 until 1966. After that, she started pursuing her solo career and call to ministry.  Over the years, Shirley fused scripture,contemporary issues,andsermon with traditional gospel.

Pastor Shirleyhas performed alongside great artists such as Andrea Crouch, Michelle Williams, Kirk Franklin, Tramaine Hawkins, Tonex, John P. Kee, Kim Burrell,Gladys Knight,Dottie People, Whitney Houston,andPatti Labelle. She has also sung for every president in the white house since Jimmy Carter.For more than 38 years, she has helped the neglected and needy in the society using her outreach program. She tries to help out as many as she can. She attributes her generosity and selfless nature to her mother who taught her from an early age that God and people depend on her. She states that the Lord made a difference in her life.

In 1983, Ceaser got married to Bishop Harold I. Williams. Although Caesar did not bear any children, she has two children named Hope I Mason and Harold I Williams she got through marriage.

Shirley Caesar is a force to reckon with in the gospel industry. She is popularly known as the “the First Lady of Gospel Music.”Caesar’sseven-decademusic career has seen her win 15 Dove Awards and 11 Grammy Awards. Shirley’s parents had 13 children. Shirley’s father had a job in the tobacco industry and preached the gospel during his spare time. James Shirley also sang in a gospel group. Shirley would occasionally sing with the group when her father died. Shirley’s mother was handicap and Shirley used to sing in local churches to bring some income to her family.

Caesar joined forces with Leroy Johnson who was a traveling evangelist,and they performed together. She managed to record her first single titled “I’d Rather Have Jesus” IN 1969, Shirley released a song titled “Hallelujah, It’s Done,” The song included a sermon. She began touring as a singing evangelist. Shirley was able to develop a dynamic performing styleby working on her own. After moving on from the Caravans in 1966, she formed her group named the Shirley Caesar Singers which saw them get an HBO deal by 1969.

Shirley won her first Grammy in1971. She won her first Dove award in 1981. By 2002, Shirley had won 13 Stellar awards.In 1969, Shirley launched Shirley Caesar Outreach Ministries to help the neglected and needy in the society with money earned from her performances.In 1987, Caesarwas electedto the Durham City Council. Shirley pastored in Durham at a church called Mount Calvary Word of Faith Church alongside her husband until his demise in 2008. Caesar received to Grammy nominations in 2016. She was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award due to her major contributions torecorded music art.
