SARA model is a familiar process of conducting a problem-oriented policing, SARA stands for scanning, analysis, response and assessment. SARA works with the idea that police alone are not able to stop crime and using community resources is more effective compared to incident driven policing. Police agencies apply SARA to utilize opportunities and search for solutions for an emerging problem in the community. SARA facilitates incorporation and is essential to determine the cause of a particular occurrence. Scanning

Scanning is essential as it helps in identifying the problems and looking for similarities in the location and incident within the facility. As the Chief of police, I would first inform the citizens within the community of the gang-related graffiti. Informing the public allows the chief to gather enough information on the perspective of the problem through a different angle. The process will also involve analyzing date for the patterns and trends that involve repeat locations, offenders and victims through mapping the crimes with specific times of the day proximity of the locations. This is because graffiti is a major concern within the riverside school as teachers have also expressed concerns on the issue. I would them consult officers supervisors and commanders and also the media about the issue.

Analysis

Analysis of data from various sources should be analyzed based on the crime reports tabled by community members who were consulted to determine the root cause of the problem that was committed. For this case data from teachers that had expressed concern and information that gang violence has been reported in the neighbouring city of Rockville. By analyzing such data as the Chief police I will be in a position to identify the culprits. It is also possible that probation police may understand the influx of gang members within the community. At the response stage, I would work with law enforcement agencies within the community and identify a comprehensive plan to address the issues that arose from analyzing the data. The response, in this case, involves helping the homeless people find shelter. Creating a non-tolerance police that no one should be found within the school compound at a stipulated time except the watchman. As the Chief, I would encourage the people of within the community to implement strategies that help protect the police as they perform their patrol. I would also implement a Weed and Seed program that helps offset costs and financial burden that the community has to carry to ensure security is a place.

Assessment

Conducting an assessment for the outcomes is also a crucial process because it ensures that certain issues are addressed. For example in a situation where the police decide to set an operation plan with an aim catching the individuals to eliminate the criminal activity of graffiti but have done nothing to address other issues within the area. SARA helps a community develop long term solutions to the problems. The assessment also involves allowing the police officers to feel a sense of accomplishment for their efforts. Assessment of results will also help in tackling similar issues and determine whether the strategies put in place will provide a long term solution to the problems facing the community.

Multiculturalism positively influences the plans because it helps me prevent discrimination and also help in gaining a deeper understanding of the differences between people. Multiculturalism also helps in creating better ideas and solutions to the problems.

Conclusion

Implementation of SARA can be costly but is beneficial when people within the community start being part of the solution to the problems. When the community is involved the police are also in a position to handle major issues due to the presence of a pool of resources.
